How do you know which post actually brought in the DM leads?

We post three or four times a week and the DMs all land in one inbox. At the end of the month I can say we got leads but not from what. How do people attribute a DM lead back to the post?

Tag the contact at the moment the automation replies, with a tag naming the post. Attribution in DMs is a thing you build in, not a report you find later.

There is no platform level answer here. Instagram does not tell you which post a DM came from once the conversation exists, so the only reliable record is the one your own flow writes at the moment it has the information.

What to do:

  1. One automation per campaign or post, rather than one with a growing keyword list. The trigger already knows which post it matched.
  2. Add a tag as an early action: launch-march, reel-captions, whatever names the source.
  3. Record a conversion when the thing you care about happens: a booking, a payment link sent, an email captured.
  4. Read the funnel as tag to conversion, not as total DMs.

What this gives you that a follower count cannot: the post with the most comments is frequently not the post with the most leads, and without tags you will keep making the first kind.

Two refinements once it is working. Use a distinct code or keyword per video if you post often, since a shared keyword collapses everything into one bucket. And tag the outcome as well as the source, so you can see which posts bring people who buy rather than people who ask.

The Analytics basics article covers where the tag to conversion view lives.

The post with the most comments not being the post with the most leads was true for us and we had no way to see it until we tagged.

Tagging the outcome as well as the source is the second step I would have skipped. Noting it.
