Community answers in more languages

3 reacties2 weergaven

This community is in English. The product interface and the help centre are in twenty languages, and the mismatch is deliberate for now rather than an oversight.

The reason: a community answer is written once by a person and machine translating it into nineteen languages would produce nineteen pages that look authoritative and are not. Our help centre and marketing pages are translated because they are reviewed content with a fixed source. Forum answers change, get corrected and get replies.

What we are considering is a middle path: translate a curated subset, the answers that are stable and get the most traffic, and mark them clearly as translated versions of an English original rather than as separate threads.

What would help us decide:

  • Which language would actually change whether you use the community?
  • Would you rather read a good English answer or a translated one in your

language?

  • If you already answer questions here, would you write in your own language if

the space allowed it?

That last option is the most interesting one to us and the one we have not committed to. A genuinely multilingual community is different from a translated one, and better, but only if there are enough people in each language for a question to get answered.

Turkish. I would write in Turkish if the space allowed it.

MG

Honestly I prefer the English original. Translated technical docs are usually worse.

GS

Same, English is fine. Search is the problem, not reading. ---
