Do you need a developer to set up DM automation?

2 відповідей3 переглядів

I am not technical and the demos all look like flowcharts with a lot of boxes. Is this something a marketing person can actually set up, or do we need to budget for a developer?

No developer for the normal cases. A comment to DM automation is a trigger, a keyword and two actions, and it is built by picking from lists rather than writing anything.

What a non technical person can do without help:

  • Connect the channel. It is an approval screen on Meta's side, not a configuration file.
  • Build comment, keyword, story reply and button flows.
  • Branch on a question, tag contacts, offer booking slots, send a payment link.
  • Read which runs succeeded and which failed, and why.

Where a developer genuinely helps:

  • Calling another system from inside a flow. Pulling an order status from your own backend, for example, needs someone who knows that system's API.
  • Anything on a schedule outside the product, such as syncing contacts into a data warehouse.
  • Custom reporting beyond the exports.

The honest warning is not about technical difficulty. It is about flow design. The hard part is deciding what the automation should say and when it should stop, and that is a marketing judgement, not an engineering one. The accounts that struggle are usually the ones that built twenty flows, not the ones that lacked a developer.

Start with one automation for your most repeated question, publish it, and read the first fifty conversations. The Build and publish an automation article walks through that first one end to end.

Deciding when it should stop being the hard part is accurate. Building it took an afternoon; getting the wording right took two weeks.
