How to get 100,000 Instagram followers in 2026: the fastest honest route

创作者 2026年10月14日 阅读约 6 分钟

There is no button that gets you 100,000 Instagram followers by Friday, and anyone who sells one is selling followers that disappear or never engage. But there is a fastest honest route, and in 2026 it is clearer than it has ever been: Instagram has explained how it recommends content to people who don't follow you, and almost every account that grows fast does the same few things with that knowledge.

This guide is that route, stage by stage: what to post, what Instagram rewards, what to avoid, and how to turn the attention into followers who stay.

Where new followers come from

Your followers already see your posts. New followers come from recommendations: Reels, Explore and suggested posts shown to people who don't follow you yet. So the question "how do I grow?" is really "how do I get recommended?"

Instagram has described how that works:

  • Every eligible post is first shown to a small audience that is likely to enjoy it, followers or not. If that audience responds well, the post is shown to a slightly bigger audience, and so on.
  • The signals with the most weight are watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach, according to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram. Sends (people sharing your post in a DM) count most for reaching non-followers. More on this in why sends drive Instagram reach.
  • Original content wins. Instagram replaces reposts with the original in recommendations, and accounts that mostly repost other people's content are left out of recommendations altogether. Posts with visible watermarks from other apps aren't eligible either.

Everything below follows from those three points.

How a reel finds new people: Instagram shows it to a small test audience, then to bigger audiences when people watch, like and send it.

Stage 1: from zero to 1,000

At this stage, nobody knows you, so the job is to find out what works.

  • Pick a narrow subject. "Fitness" is a crowd. "Strength training for women over 40 who train at home" is a place people go looking for. A narrow subject makes it easy for Instagram to find the right test audience, and easy for a viewer to decide to follow.
  • Post reels, often. Reels are where most recommendations happen. Three to five a week is enough to learn quickly without burning out.
  • Make the first two seconds do the work. State the payoff on screen before anything else: "The 3 mistakes that ruin a home workout". Viewers decide almost immediately whether to stay, and watch time is a top signal.
  • Use trial reels. Instagram lets you show a reel to non-followers first and see how it does before your followers see it. It is the cheapest way to test hooks. See trial reels.
  • Answer every comment. Early conversations bring people back and tell you what your audience wants next.

Stage 2: from 1,000 to 10,000

Now you have data. Use it.

  • Find your winners. Sort your last 30 posts by shares per reach and by reach from non-followers. The top three are your formats. Make more of them, on purpose.
  • Turn winners into series. "Part 2" and recurring formats ("Every Monday, one budget fix") give people a reason to follow instead of just watching once.
  • Collaborate. A Collab post is co-authored: it appears on both profiles and is shown to both audiences. Partner with accounts slightly bigger than yours in a nearby niche, and bring a real idea rather than a request for a shoutout.
  • Fix your profile. A visitor decides in seconds. The bio should say who it is for and what they get ("Home workouts for busy women, new plan every week"), the highlights should show your best series, and the link should lead somewhere useful.

Stage 3: from 10,000 to 100,000

At this size, growth comes from a few posts that travel far, and from not wasting them.

  • Make content people send. Posts that make someone think of a friend ("this is so you", "we should do this", "you need this") get sent, and sends are what carry a reel to new audiences.
  • Go bigger on what works. Longer explainers, better production on proven topics, a second format that answers the questions your comments keep asking.
  • Be ready for the spike. When a reel takes off, tens of thousands of new people see your account in a day or two. Most will leave without following unless you give them a reason and a next step. This is where many accounts lose their best chance.
Three stages to 100,000 followers: find what works, turn winners into series and collabs, then make posts people send.

Turning a viral reel into followers who stay

A big reel brings viewers. Followers come from what happens next:

  • A clear reason to follow. End the reel with what comes next: "Part 2 tomorrow, follow so you don't miss it".
  • Something worth getting. Offer a free plan, a guide or a checklist in the comments with a keyword. Each person who comments gets it in their DMs right away, through an automation such as ChatinFlow's comment-to-DM flow. Instagram has said that keyword calls to action are fine when they deliver something real; it only objects to prompts made to game reach. The full setup is in our comment-to-DM guide.
  • A conversation. The DM gives you a direct line to someone who just discovered you. Ask what they want to learn next. Their answers are your next ten posts.
  • An email list. Followers are rented; an email list is yours. Offer more by email inside the same DM: see grow your email list from Instagram.

What slows you down (or gets you restricted)

  • Buying followers or engagement. Fake accounts don't watch, like or send, so they drag down the signals Instagram uses to decide what to recommend. Instagram removes inauthentic accounts, and buying them breaks its terms.
  • Follow-for-follow and engagement pods. People who follow you to get a follow back don't care about your content. Your reach per post goes down as your follower count goes up.
  • Reposting other people's content. Accounts that mostly repost are excluded from recommendations.
  • Watermarks from other apps. A reel with another platform's logo on it isn't eligible for recommendations.
  • Bots that comment, follow or like for you. They break Instagram's terms and are the most common reason accounts get restricted.

Professional accounts can check Account Status in the app to see whether any post isn't eligible for recommendations, and why.

How long does it take?

Honestly, it varies too much to promise. Some accounts get there in months on the back of one strong format; most take a year or more of steady posting. What you control is the number of good attempts: the more original, well-hooked reels you test, the more chances you give Instagram to find the audience for them.

A weekly plan

  1. Three to five reels in your best formats, one of them a trial reel testing a new hook.
  2. One carousel that teaches something people will save or send.
  3. One collab or one reply to a comment that turns into a post.
  4. Thirty minutes reading comments and DMs to choose next week's topics.
  5. A keyword offer on any post that promises something, so viewers become conversations and subscribers.
