Do you need someone's permission before sending them an automated DM?

2 odpowiedzi0 wyświetleń

Someone comments on my post asking for a link. If my automation DMs them the link, is that consent? And is it different from adding them to a list I message later?

The comment is consent for that reply, and it is not consent for anything after it. Those are two separate permissions and the platforms treat them differently.

Replying is covered. When someone comments, they opened a conversation with you and a private reply is a legitimate answer inside it. Same for a DM, a story reply, or a button tap. You do not need a separate opt in to answer the thing they just asked.

Messaging them later is a different question. A contact record existing in your audience is not permission to keep messaging. The 24 hour window handles the technical side, but the honest test is whether the person would expect the next message. Someone who asked for a price list did not ask for a weekly newsletter.

If you want ongoing permission, ask for it in the conversation, plainly, and record the answer:

  • Offer it as a choice rather than a default. A quick reply button that says "yes, send me new drops" is an opt in you can point to later.
  • Store it as a tag or a field on the contact, so a later send can filter on it rather than on who happens to be in your audience.
  • Honour STOP the moment it arrives, on every channel, without asking them to confirm twice.

The Audience: contacts, tags, and segments article covers where that consent tag lives and how to filter a send by it. The short version: treat the contact list as people you may be allowed to message, not people you are.

Treating the list as people you may be allowed to message is a better default than what we had.
