How do you run an Instagram giveaway without picking winners by hand?

Our last giveaway took an evening to sort out and then someone in the comments said we picked a friend. I want the draw to be something I can defend. How do people set this up?

Collect entries with the comment trigger and let the giveaway module do the draw, so the result is a record you can show rather than a decision you have to defend.

Every matching comment becomes an entry with the handle, the time and the source. Entries can also arrive from Instagram DMs, Messenger and WhatsApp if you open those.

What gets checked at entry time:

  • Channel and post. An entry counts only from the channel and the post you allowed.
  • Duplicates. A repeat entry from the same person is disqualified with a recorded reason, so you can show that nobody got ten chances.
  • Keyword. The comment has to match what you asked for.

What is not checked, and this is worth being straight about: whether the person follows you, and whether the accounts they tagged are real. Tag counts are recorded and shown so a human can look, but nothing verifies them. A follow check would mean extra API calls that the platform rate limits, and verifying a tagged handle would mean a lookup per tag. So if your rules say follow us and tag two friends, announce it and spot check it, but do not describe it as enforced, because it is not.

The draw runs over the eligible entries and records who won and when. Winners carry a claim state, so a prize nobody claims is marked forfeited instead of quietly vanishing. That record is the answer when someone asks whether it was fair.

The Run a giveaway article covers the entry rules and the claim window.

Saying out loud that the follow is not checked is more useful than pretending it is. We will word the caption differently.
