Trial reels let you post a reel to people who don't follow you before your followers see it. After about a day, you see how it did, and you decide whether to share it with your followers. For creators who use comment keywords, that is a cheap way to test a hook, an offer and a call to action on new people, without filling your followers' feed with experiments.
This guide explains how trial reels work, what to test with them, and how to connect a test to a comment-to-DM flow, including a two-minute check to run before you rely on it.
How trial reels work
Instagram announced trial reels in December 2024. The basics:
- You make a reel as usual and turn on the Trial toggle before you share it.
- The reel is shown to people who don't follow you. It doesn't appear in your followers' Feed or Reels tab, although people can still find it if it is sent in a DM or through its audio, location or effects.
- After about 24 hours, you see its numbers: views, likes, comments and shares.
- You then share it with your followers with one tap, or let Instagram share it automatically if it performs well.
The feature was built for exactly the worry it solves: creators told Instagram they were nervous about posting something new to their followers in case it flopped.

Why it suits keyword offers
A comment keyword asks for effort: the viewer has to stop, understand the offer and type a word. Whether they do depends on three things you can change:
- The hook: the first seconds that decide whether they watch at all.
- The offer: what they get for commenting.
- The call to action: how clearly you say what to comment.
Testing these on your followers has a cost: they have seen you before, they react differently from strangers, and a weak version takes up space in their feed. A trial reel goes to the audience you want to grow into, and a weak version never reaches your followers.
What to test
Change one thing at a time, so you know what made the difference.
- Two hooks, same offer. Same video, different first line on screen. Compare views and the share of viewers who watched to the end.
- Two offers, same hook. "Comment GUIDE for the checklist" against "Comment GUIDE for the template". Compare keyword comments per view.
- Two calls to action. On screen only, or on screen and spoken. Compare keyword comments per view.
- Two keywords. A plain word (GUIDE) against a niche word (ROUTINE). Look at how many people typed it correctly, not only how many commented.
Give each version a different keyword, or tie each automation to its own reel, so the comments and the DMs are counted separately.
Connecting a trial reel to a comment-to-DM flow
- Create the automation before you post: trigger Instagram comment, the keyword, and a Send private reply step that delivers what the reel promises.
- Post the reel as a trial.
- If your tool asks you to pick the post, choose the trial reel once it is live, or set the automation to match the keyword on new posts.
- Add a Public reply with a few variants. People who don't follow you get the private reply in their message requests, and the public reply tells them where to look.
Run this check first
Instagram's documentation for comment automations doesn't mention trial reels, so don't assume. Before you judge a test by its DM numbers:
- Post the trial reel.
- From a second account that doesn't follow you, find the reel (open it from your own profile grid and copy its link, or send it to that account) and comment the keyword.
- Check that the private reply arrives in that account's message requests, and that the public reply appears under the comment.
- In ChatinFlow, open the automation's run history and confirm the run is there.
If the reply arrives, the reel works like any other, and you can compare versions on DMs as well as on comments. If it doesn't, judge the trial on comments and views only, and switch the automation on once you share the winning version with your followers.
Keep the keyword honest
Instagram said in 2024 that content made to game reach, such as asking for a specific word only to collect comments, may not be recommended, and clarified that calls to action and tools such as ManyChat are fine. A trial reel is a recommendation test by design, so this matters even more here: test keywords that deliver what the reel promises, and check Account Status if a version gets unusually little reach.
Reading the result
For each version, after the first 24 hours:
- Keyword comments per 1,000 views. The main number for an offer test.
- Shares per 1,000 views. Shares are DM sends, the signal Instagram weighs most for reaching non-followers. A high share rate means the reel can travel; see why sends drive Instagram reach.
- Replies to the first DM. If the DM part works, the share of people who answered your private reply tells you whether the offer kept its promise.
Small numbers swing a lot. A version that wins by a few comments on a few thousand views may not be better. Look for clear gaps, and repeat a promising test before you change your whole approach.

A simple weekly loop
- Monday: post two trial versions of one idea, each with its own keyword.
- Tuesday: read the numbers and share the winner with your followers.
- Keep the winning hook and test a new offer the following week.
Over a month, that gives you four tested hooks and four tested offers, all measured on the audience you want to reach. For the full DM setup behind the keyword, read our comment-to-DM guide, and for ideas, our list of comment keyword ideas.
