Yes. Instagram's Messaging API only works with a professional account, which means Business or Creator, and that account has to be connected to a Facebook Page. A personal account cannot be automated by any tool, including this one.
The full set of requirements before anything can be connected:
- An Instagram Business or Creator account.
- A Facebook Page linked to it.
- Admin access to that Page with the messaging permissions granted during the
OAuth flow.
- Messaging access to third party apps enabled in the Instagram app settings.
That last one is the quiet blocker. It lives under Settings, Privacy, Messages in the Instagram app, and when it is off the connection completes but no inbound message ever arrives. If your automation looks connected and never fires, check that toggle before anything else.
Switching a personal account to Business is free and takes about a minute in the Instagram app. You keep your followers, your posts and your handle.
Creator accounts work for messaging, with one difference worth knowing: some shopping and catalog features are Business only. If your automation just answers DMs, comments and story mentions, Creator is fine.
