How to choose an Instagram username people can find, say and remember
Your username is the one piece of your profile that travels everywhere: in every comment you leave, every tag, every story mention, every link in your bio and every time someone tells a friend to look you up. A good handle is easy to find in search, easy to say out loud and hard to misspell.
Your username is the one piece of your profile that travels everywhere: in every comment you leave, every tag, every story mention, every link in your bio and every time someone tells a friend to look you up. A good handle is easy to find in search, easy to say out loud and hard to misspell. A bad one makes people work to reach you, and many will not bother. This guide covers Instagram's rules for usernames, the patterns that keep a handle short and findable, what to do when your name is taken and how to change your handle without losing the people who already know you.

Instagram's username rules
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Length | Up to 30 characters |
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores |
| Periods | Not at the start, not at the end and never two in a row |
| Case | Usernames are not case sensitive; they show in lowercase |
| Spaces, accents, symbols | Not allowed |
| Uniqueness | Each username belongs to one account |
Accented letters such as é, ü or ş cannot be used, so "Café Lune" becomes something like cafelune. Styled Unicode letters, the kind you see in fancy bios, are not allowed either. The generator folds accents to plain letters and drops everything that is not allowed, so every idea it shows is one Instagram will accept.
Your display name, the bold name above your bio, is a separate field with looser rules. It can have spaces, accents and emoji. Instagram search matches both, which is why it pays to have your real name in one and a clean version of it in the other.
What makes a handle work
Short
Short handles are easier to type, remember and fit into a story mention. Every character you add is another chance for a typo. Aim for the shortest version of your name that is free, and treat 15 characters or fewer as a good target.
Easy to say
Imagine telling someone your handle at a market stall or on a podcast. "It's maya bakes, all one word" is easy. "It's x underscore maya underscore bakes underscore official" is not. Underscores and periods are invisible when spoken, so use them only when you must.
Close to your name
People search for the name they know. If your shop is called Lune Coffee, the handle that matches it, or comes closest, will be found by the people already looking for you. A clever handle that has nothing to do with your name has to be learned separately.
Hard to misspell
Avoid joins that blur where one word ends and the next begins, numbers swapped in for letters and spellings that differ from how the word sounds. If people will spell it wrong, they will find someone else.
When your name is taken
Popular names are taken on Instagram. The good news is that a small addition often keeps a handle short and clear. The generator uses the same patterns:
| Pattern | Example | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Name plus what you do | mayabakes, maya.bakes | Creators and small businesses |
| What you do plus "by" plus name | breadbymaya | Personal brands built around a craft |
| Name plus city | lunecoffeeaustin, lune.austin | Local businesses |
| Name plus a brand word | lunestudio, lune.co, luneshop | Brands and shops |
| Name plus a personal word | mayacreates, mayadaily | Creators |
| A short prefix | hellolune, meetmaya, thelune | When every suffix is taken |
| Initials plus what you do | mcbaking | Longer names |
Choose the pattern that fits your account. A local bakery benefits from the city because customers search for "bakery Austin". A creator benefits from a word that says what they make. A brand benefits from words such as studio, shop or official that sound like a business.
Patterns to avoid
- Random numbers. maya19847 looks like a spam account and is impossible to remember.
- Strings of underscores or periods. maya__bakes__ is hard to type and to say.
- The word "real" or "official" when you are not famous. It invites doubt.
- Trends that will date. A handle built on this year's slang ages quickly.

Checking whether a handle is free
No outside tool can reliably tell you whether an Instagram username is free. Instagram does not share that information with other apps, and any site that claims to check it is guessing. The reliable way takes ten seconds:
- Open Instagram and go to Edit profile.
- Tap Username and type the idea.
- Instagram tells you at once whether it is available.
Do this before you print anything with the handle on it.
It is also worth checking that the same handle, or a close match, is free on the other places you use: TikTok, YouTube, a domain name. A consistent handle across platforms is easier for people to follow.
Changing your username
You can change your username at any time, and your followers, posts and messages stay with you. There are things to know first:
- Old mentions do not follow you. Posts and comments that tagged your old handle will no longer link to your profile.
- Your old handle can be taken. Once you change, someone else may claim the old name after a short while. If people still type it, they may land on a stranger.
- Printed material goes out of date. Business cards, menus, packaging and QR codes that show the old handle need replacing.
- Instagram limits how often you can change it in a short period, so decide before you switch.
Tell your audience before you change: a story a few days before, a pinned post and a note in your bio for a week or two afterwards.
A short checklist
- Under 30 characters, and ideally 15 or fewer.
- Only letters, numbers, periods and underscores, with no period at the start, at the end or twice in a row.
- Matches or comes close to your name.
- Easy to say out loud without spelling it.
- No random numbers.
- Checked in the Instagram app, and ideally free on your other platforms too.
Finding a handle in a minute
- Open the Instagram Username Generator and type your name or brand.
- Add what you do and your city if you want ideas for when the plain name is taken.
- Pick the account type: brand or shop, creator or personal, or local business. The endings change with it.
- Read the ideas, sorted shortest first. Up to 24 are shown, and every one follows Instagram's rules.
- Copy a favorite and try it in Edit profile, which tells you if it is free.
The rest of the profile
A good handle gets people to your profile; the rest has to convince them. Put your real name and what you do in the display name, then write a bio that says who it is for and what to do next. The Bio Optimizer scores a bio on the seven things visitors react to, and the Profile Picture Maker shows how your photo looks in the small circle.
Answer the people who find you
A handle that is easy to find brings messages: questions about prices, opening hours and orders, often at times you are not at your phone. With Instagram automation in ChatinFlow, those messages get a reply in seconds, and anything that needs you is handed over.
